Devon Photos #3

Holy Trinity Church, Weare Giffard village
Perpendicular to the tower of the church, the Brinsmead gravestones are easy to find (back left corner of churchyard). Thanks to Andy Sims for all his help in his guide to visiting these sites: http://www.brinsmead.net/roots/pilgrimage.html

This took me one generation back, from Henry the piano-maker to his parents, Henry & Elizabeth Brinsmead.

Mother Elizabeth was native to Weare Giffard, but dad Henry was from Alverdiscott nearby... the family was mostly from another village, St. Giles-in-the-Wood (more on that later).

Piano-maker Henry's grandmother was also buried in Holy Trinity churchyard... a beautiful epitaph which reminds me of the deep and sincere Christ-centered piety of some of my Devon ancestors.
Next to the churchyard is the medieval manor of Weare Giffard Hall.

 Interior of church

Young Henry would have seen this stone tomb effigy of a knight (probably Sir Walter Giffard), who may have been on the Crusades, as his legs are crossed. Note the sword.

Interesting pew-ends with many carvings worth seeing

The baptismal font in which young Henry Brinsmead would have been christened.

The local village pub! Alas, closed when I came by. Most disappointing.

 Goodbye, Weare Giffard...
